The students, so moved by their experience, wanted to perform a reenactment of their own at Guilford, which is famously linked to the freedom movement. This was the challenge faced by Adrienne when, in 1998, a group of Guilford students returned from a spring break trip to Ohio after taking part in an Underground Railroad reenactment. More than 20 years ago, Professor Emerita of History Adrienne Israel, posed a question to herself and her students: What would it mean to shed light on a part of history that for nearly 60 years played out largely invisible because it was conducted in secret and under cover of night? Professor Emerita of History Adrienne Israel's research led to the discovery of Lavina Curry, a black abolitionist who helped shepherd enslaved men from North Carolina to Indiana via the Underground Railroad.
